Reselling … Can you really make money reselling?

Are you thinking of becoming a reseller for a side hustle? You landed in the right spot. We have been reselling for over 25 years on just about every marketplace out there, and new marketplaces are launching every day. The big question is, can you really make money reselling? Absolutely! Whether you’re looking to add a little extra cash in your pocket or start a full-on business, reselling can do just that. It will take some work, but this guide below should get you pointed in the right direction.

How Much Can You Make Reselling?

The largest seller on eBay is BHFO, a husband and wife team that started reselling out of their home 2003, located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 2023, the couple brought in over $25 million in sales! Yes, $25 million. The couple, who started in their basement and garage, now operate a 240,000 sg ft warehouse in Iowa. As of this posting, looking at sales data of reseller @nilesy on Poshmark, who has sold $1.3 million in the last year on the Poshmark platform. I know what you’re thinking: there is no way you can get to those numbers, right? You have to start somewhere, right?

Let’s look at a smaller reseller who is crushing it on Poshmark. A user that goes by @mightyflyguy has monthly sales averaging $10,000. This user focuses on selling shoes. We will come back to that in a bit. Of @mightyflyguys monthly intake, $6800 is coming from van shoes.  As I mentioned, we have been resellers for over 25 years. The ultimate answer is yes; you can make money by reselling. We have been very successful at it. We started when there was just eBay, but now the app stores are filled with marketplaces. You will be the person who will control whether you make $100 a month or thousands a month by the time available and efforts put into your reselling hustle.

Poshmark

Founded in 2011, Poshmark has become popular amongst clothing sellers. Poshmark started attracting users with unwanted clothing in their closets to sell on Poshmark in their online “Closet.” Today, the marketplace has expanded into many other areas, such as home wear, pet care, and electronics.  The Beauty and Makeup category is extremely popular.  Poshmark is the platform for you if you want to sell clothing. You will noticeably see and feel the social media vibe. Users are required to “Share” their items with their followers and users.

Mercari

Mercari may be one of the most overlooked marketplaces out there. Although it’s considerably smaller than those above, we will never NOT list items on Mercari. When items on eBay or Poshmark aren’t selling, they always seem to sell on Mercari. Just like eBay, you can resell just about anything.

Mercari Local is a new service offered by the Mercari app. This convenient delivery option allows sellers to sell their items locally and have them delivered by a partner delivery service such as Uber or FedEx SameDay City, simplifying the selling process.

Selling Fees: No Selling Fees.

Facebook Marketplace

The largest social media platform, with over 3 billion monthly users, has become the most popular local online marketplace. Gone are the days of Craigslist. The Facebook marketplace is the internet’s yard sale flea market, where you can sell just about anything. We like selling items on Facebook that are too large to ship or items that aren’t selling on other platforms.

Facebook marketplace offers the option to ship items.

We have noticed that selling on the FB marketplace can be very time-consuming. It seems like no one reads the listings. We will list items with a very detailed description and then receive countless messages: ” Is this available?” “Where are you located?” “Can you drop it off to me?” People… read the listing right! It can be frustrating.

Selling Fees: No fees on local sales or 5% of the total sales price for online sales.

Depop

Depop’s platform comprises the majority Gen Z and millennial community and has helped popularise preloved style and drive resale culture forward in the UK, US, and Australia. Founded in London, Depop is a clothing reselling-driven marketplace.

In July 2025 Depop removed selling feeS for sellers in the US and UK.  Sellers outside the UK and US will see a 10% selling fee.

Selling Fees: Final Processing Fee ( 3.3% + $0.45) in The United States and UK.

Grailed

Are you looking to sell rare vintage or designer items? Grailed was started in 2013 with a focus on rare vintage clothing and designer items. With only about 10 million users, Grailed is a niche category of men’s and women’s clothing.

Selling Fees: 9% of total sales value + a 3.49% payment processing fee + $0.49 on the item’s total price for US domestic payments.

Kidizen

As the name may hint, Kidizen is a marketplace focused on—you guessed it—selling kids’ clothing and toys. With only 1 million users, Kidizen is made up of “moms” reselling clothing items their kids have outgrown. Kidizen recently launched a “Mamas” category for moms.

Selling Fees: 12% marketplace fee plus $0.95 from the list price.

WhatNot

If you can imagine eBay, Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok all having a kid together, you would get WhatNot. This is the ultimate social ecommerce experience.

WhatNot is one of the fastest-growing marketplaces, founded in 2019. It has a live-streaming marketplace that is attracting resellers. The ability to stream live while displaying items has been a huge hit. In addition to its live stream, WhatNot has a traditional marketplace. Backed by many large venture capital firms, WhatNot is now valued at $3.7 Billion.

Selling Fees: 8%

Shopify

Shopify Market Share In The Global eCommerce Market- With a market share of 10.32%, Shopify was the 4th most preferred e-commerce software platform worldwide in 2023.

Where to find Items to Resell?

Many new resellers will begin listing items they have around their homes. We all have clothing items we have yet to wear or have outgrown. Additionally, you may have old electronic items that you think are entirely worthless. Do you know items like old TV remotes, cassette players, and portable CD players can be of great value?

Flea markets and yard sales are also famous for resellers to source items.

Another favorite of ours is clearance items from online or brick-and-mortar stores.  This is also known as Retail Arbitrage (RA) and Online Arbitrage (OA). RA involves sourcing items from a retail store with the intent to resell them, while OA involves sourcing items from online stores with the same purpose.

Outlet stores can also be an option. However, be careful, as items in outlets are often manufactured with the intent of being sold exclusively in outlet stores.

Lastly, as you grow your business, purchasing liquidation lots may be the key to expanding and taking it to the next level.

What items should you resell?

As a new reseller, you may list clothing, electronics, household items, and anything in between. Over the years, we have narrowed down to selling shoes as our niche. When selling clothing, popular branded items will always sell well, even in used condition. Selling clothing items such as jeans can be very lucrative and difficult. Every pair of jeans fits a little differently. Your listing will need to include measurements to help buyers make the decision to hit the buy button.

We love shoes for one reason: my feet have stayed the same size since high school, and shoe sizes are much more consistent from brand to brand.

When deciding to become a niche reseller, you can become an expert in that area. However, you do not need to be a niche reseller.

Biggest Rule as a Reseller….

My number one rule for a new reseller is…CHECK THE SOLDS!

What does this mean? Many new sellers get discouraged quickly over slow sales or a complete lack of sales. Before listing an item, you should always ask yourself what does this item resale for. You can search the item and sold listings to understand what buyers will pay.  If you’re outsourcing items and find what you think is a great item to resell, if you are about to pay $20 and the item is only reselling for $22 on eBay, it would be best to pass on that item.

Check those sold listings. If there is anything you remember from this post, it is that!

Set a profit goal per item.

How much time should you spend reselling?

This will vary from reseller to reseller; I like to spend a few hours each day. Typically, when I wake up in the morning, I will package items sold the previous day. I like to schedule pick-ups to maximize my time. Most days, we will spend 1-2 hours daily photographing and building listings. When you first start, you will likely spend a little more time until you develop an efficient workflow. The best thing about reselling is you set and control how much time you want to put into it. More time will equal more sales; with that said, if you have a full-time job, you can still be very successful in reselling.

Happy Selling!
